DT 1990 PRO: It is raining top ratings 09/2016

Open-back, over-ear headphone for mastering and mixing on a high level. At last here’s a big brother for the DT 990 – the traditional company in Heilbronn, Germany has, once again, created an excellent studio headphone. It is literally raining top ratings, mainly for the sound, but also for the workmanship regarding comfort and flexibility (cables and ear pads).

The beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO is a headphone for the highest demands in the studio work – especially when mixing down and mastering, because it is an open-back model.

Regarding the subtle aspects this headphone is completely convincing. The stereo image and the bass quality are very spacious and marvellously differentiated. Everything can be excellently located or placed in the mix. Furthermore, there is an excellent impulse fidelity.  In this way percussion sounds rich in transients are reproduced very accurate and without any blurs. The workmanship is top, befitting to the status and typical for the manufacturer. The delivery includes a straight and a coiled cable, which meet different tastes and/or applications. A well-padded bag, where everything can be placed and transported safely makes the delivery complete.

We give an excellent five out of five points in the beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO review.

Those who want to ascend into the professional league (or stay there) will receive a suitable monitoring tool with this headphone.

DT 1990 PRO: The PRO that thrills even ambitious hi-fi fans 09/2016

The beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO is thrilling with an overall balanced character due to its enormous transparency, agility and radiance. With a decent “make up” of one or two decibel in the range of 2500 to 5000 Hertz it played rather fresh than reluctant, and it never sounded superficial, but gripping, direct and simply great. It was very good to hear on the music tracks that live with transparency and radiant sound colours.

In fact the velours pads caused a bass boost with a slight emphasis in the range of 100 to 150 Hz. But this was perfectly straightened when using the A pads. The result was a deep, plump, very defined bass, with which you could also listen to complicated bass synthie arrangements.

Without any doubt the beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO has character, but it is definitely no dazzler: because after intensive listening for several days I could not find a real, sonic weakness. I do not like to make such absolute statements, but at present I do not know any other headphone in this price class, which can reach the DT 1990 PRO sound.

Conclusion: The new beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro with its balanced sound adjustment is first of all a tool for audio professionals and musicians, who need reliability for their daily work. With a view to future applications: For those who want to work "in the box" with increasingly market-driven speaker virtualization plug-ins à la Waves Nx, headphones with a balanced frequency response are mandatory, because only they can use the software incorporated in the external ear transmission functions, which is absolutely necessary for the desired, authentic room impression. "

But the DTX 1990 Pro is not just that, it is also a perfect alternative for demanding music lovers, who do not like the tuned sound of most hi-fi headphones, which is often based on psychoacoustic tricks. The DT 1990 PRO masters this balancing act perfectly: With all the neutrality it provides an open, detailed, but never over-paved sound for an intensive music experience, which will definitely ensure that also many hi-fi enthusiasts will enjoy listening with it. With the beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO everything is just right: processing quality, finish, sound, comfort of wearing - and all this at an extremely attractive price. LowBeats give full 5 stars plus a very thick recommendation as "editorial reference up to 1.000 euro." With the DT 1990 Pro, beyerdynamic places a real highlight in a long overdue market gap. Congratulations to Heilbronn

DT 1990 PRO: It sounds terrific 09/2016

I really enjoy presenting the DT 1990 PRO with Ilya Richter’s slogan “Lights out – spot on”, because it sounds terrific. When my all-time-favourite-soundcheck-song is played, at first I do not know how the headphone sounds, because in general I notice unpleasant frequency humps whenever I listen in to songs. Moaning mids, cardboard-like resonances, squashy basses or exaggerated highs? Wrong! The open headphones with Tesla drivers sound extremely balanced without any disturbing proliferations.  My initial lack of orientation turns into listening enjoyment. At first I was missing defects in the sound to compare the sound with other headphones, but now I enjoy listening, which is free from any disturbances. In order to find something I can criticise, I play all my test songs I am used to and I do not find anything I can criticise. The beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO sounds pleasant with a lot of bass and reproduces each fine frequency of the highs with the balanced pads. With the other pair of pads, which are analytical linear, I hear less bass, but apart from that no difference. Those who get tired of too much bass or those who mainly record speech or have to edit, should refer to the linear pads. For everybody else I would recommend the ear pads which beyerdynamic refers to as balanced. They had me listening one song after another and I had fun listening for five hours, before I took them off again.

The beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO really meets my expectations after all those announcements in advance. Although the DT 990 PRO will be still available as an open studio headphone, it will be replaced by the DT 1990 PRO as a new studio reference headphone. Without any disturbing resonances and featuring an excellent reproduction of fine details, I attest the latest addition of the traditional company from Heilbronn as absolute suitability for the studio. Featuring a precise impulse behaviour and a clean image of the entire audio spectrum, the DT 1990 PRO is ideal for mixing, mastering, monitoring, but also for just listening to the music. It fits tight and at the same time so comfortable that you can use it for hours without your ears getting “hot” and without any pressure or the feeling that you want to get rid of it. In my opinion with a recommended retail price of 599 Euro you get the most precise and best sounding headphone on this side of the 1000-Euro-limit.
