The present version with 32 Ohms is suitable for the use with portable playback devices, but equally with hi-fi systems, with television or with purpose-built headphone amplifiers.

  • Ambient sound is attenuated, but can be still perceived (semi-open design)

"The Beyerdynamic DT 880 harkens back to a time when headphones were still tools, not fashion statements."

"It’s the antithesis of today’s streamlined, plastic pieces of head candy. In fact, it’s probably no accident the latest version doesn’t look all that different from the first pair that rolled off the assembly line in 1980. Obviously, the 87-year-old German audio company felt there was little need mess with what already works. Thankfully, this fealty to the headphone’s rich history extends not just to design, but also sonic performance."

    [...]

"Like other cans in this class, the 880s pack a superbly detailed soundstage, letting you pick out — and pick up on — instrumentation and nuances you’d never know where there on other headphones. This proved particularly rewarding when listening to sonic landscape master Amon Tobin’s new album, ISAM. Tobin, of course, is known for crafting otherworldly — and occasionally batshit-crazy — sounds by digitally manipulating real world ones. All of these sprung to life on the 880s with impressive depth and richness. Thankfully, the 880s also come with pinpoint-accurate bass which never got in the way even when I threw heavier stuff at them. Combine those attributes with lush mids that make voices sparkle and shimmer, and it’s hard to come up with any reason to dislike these monster cans."

"Overall, if I had one qualm, it was that the 880s did seem to favor the higher frequencies. And depending on how you feel about treble, and what you’re listening to, they can occasionally sound harsh or overly bright at times. Although this can easily be fixed with a modest EQ correction."

"That slight imbalance notwithstanding, these are still some extremely accurate, even clinical-sounding headphones. So be warned: All that overcompressed drivel sitting on your MP3 player or hard drive will sound exactly like what it is, with no overblown or bloated low-end to cover up all the shortcomings. However, when paired with a quality Apple Lossless, FLAC or — even better — CD source, the 880s will definitely make you want don a smoking jacket, light up a pipe and sit by the hi-fi — er, laptop — for hours."

"It is a favorite among professional recording engineers for its accuracy, and a favorite among music lovers for its clean, open, uncolored and faithful-to-the-concert-hall sound."

    [...]

"I liked this DT 880 so much that I bought it after reviewing it, and the more I listen, the more I love it!"

    [...]

"The DT 880 have no rough edges sonically or mechanically."

    [...]

"These are tough, well-built, inexpensive and great sounding headphones. If you want natural, open and uncolored sound from a tough set of professional headphones, get a pair for yourself."

    [...]

"The DT 880 sounds awesome right out of the box without any break-in."

    [...]

"The DT880s have no response peaks or valleys to call attention to themselves, so the slight and broad balance differences are quickly forgotten. The sound of the DT 880 doesn't change much as I put my hands up to their outsides."

"The DT 880s offer beautiful electrostatic sound, and they don't go Pop! when pressed to your head or demand a plug-in-the-wall bias source to drive them."

    [...]

"The DT 880 sounds light and airy, spacious, smooth, beautiful, clean and open. WIth the DT 880, you'll hear everything right — and wrong — with your recordings."

    [...]

The DT 880's neutral spectral balance is from the professional monitoring market, and less like boosted home hi-fi headphones. The DT 880s are dry and neutral, not warm unless something was recorded that way."

    [...]

"With the DT 880, you'll hear everything, including conductors singing along, breathing, page turns and seat creaks. It's easy to hear the difference between condenser and ribbon mics on vocals.

"The Beyer DT 880 has natural, unhyped, smooth and unboosted bass and treble. Casual users may prefer the Beyer DT 990 or DT770, each of which have boosted bass and treble. The careful listener will prefer this DT 880 because it sounds right, while the boosts in the DT 990 and DT770 aren't exactly pretty."

    [...]

"Once you get over the lack of boom and peaky bass overemphasis of lesser headphones, the Beyer DT 880 astounds with solid, undistorted bass to well below 20 Hz. Its response is strong down to 30 Hz, and still audible at 14.5 Hz! Of course below 20 Hz "audible" is more the room noise modulating itself from intermodulation with the headphone's subsonic input, but that's the way it works in live sound, too. The DT 880's bass is clean and clear with no boom, so the deepest bass isn't hidden behind it. Even driven to deafening levels with a real headphone amplifier, I can't get sine waves to buzz, rattle or distort. Pedals sound natural."

"Comfort levels were among the best we've experienced. The pillow-soft ear pads barely seemed to press against our ears. Even after long hours of use, we were hardly aware we were wearing headphones."

"The Beyerdynamic DT 880s weren't shy about putting us in the middle of the climatic disturbances of the DVD The Day After Tomorrow. The extremes of wind, hail, torrential rains, and pounding tsunami were chillingly visceral."

    [...]

"The Beyerdynamic DT 880s sounded rich and natural on Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927" track from the Our New Orleans benefit CD, in which Newman is on piano and has members of both the Louisiana and New York Philharmonic orchestras backing him up. The DT 880s did justice to the ravishing strings, and Newman's vocals and piano sounded wonderfully realistic. Moreover, we preferred the DT 880s (...)"

    [...]

"The Good: The Beyerdynamic DT 880 headphones are among the most comfortable on the market, and they come packaged in a gorgeous padded aluminum storage case. The headphones use a standard miniplug connector but include a 1/4-inch adapter and a 15-foot extension cord."

"The Bad: The DT 880s are expensive, and ill suited for use with the iPod."

"The Bottom Line The Beyerdynamic DT 880s are extra comforatable and their sound is certainly audiophile level, but stereo imaging isn't as wide open as other top contenders."

When beyerdynamic launched their legendary DT 880 top model in 1980/81 it was like a small landslide.

    [...]

The best working tool of the old school was and is the neutral DT 880. The same refers to musical enjoyment, at least when you do without effects and allow for long listening sessions.

    [...]

The new DT 880, however, with the same name since 2003, is from its appearance a completely different headphone. Almost 100 grams heavier, equipped with noble and high-quality aluminium parts. Compared to its predecessor, it is technically rather light and haptic according to beyerdynamic – that is heavily revised.

    [...]

The author to these lines wrote in the June issue of Stereo in 2003: “Remoulded headphone classic with a very excellent sound” and “a captivating natural, lively and powerful sound.”
The pressure is slightly higher, but is reduced by the better and pleasant pads. The sound of the DT 880 is therefore a little bit mature, the bass is more powerful, more sonorous in total, but still transparent.

For large auditoriums there are customised microphone concepts, for individual ears unique headphone are manufactured. The lot size of one becomes a core message at the company’s headquarters in Heilbronn. On their website beyerdynamic provide a headphone configurator, like the car industry, for the DT 880 and DT 990 over-ear headphones. Which colour, which leather, perhaps a plate with your name? This is a good sign: The individuality costs only a little more than the standard model; at best a modest waiting time of two weeks.

Beyerdynamic has found the happy medium. The DT 880 is so-to-speak the fairest of all tested headphones. Each instrument has its chance, each frequency range is equal, each sound has its individual performance. The balanced sound allows a relaxed experience of listening. The typical beyerdynamic effect: the headphone does not neglect the deep sounds, but emphasises them when it is necessary. You listen more intense, the headphone seems to conduct music.

We did not find the perfect headphone, but with the DT 880 beyerdynamic is damned close: Fantastic sound, high level of comfort and precious workmanship.

The classic dynamic headphone. The plush pads appease the rather high headband pressure and the live weight of 350 grams. It sounds brilliant and always harmoniously – a headphone with a spectacular bass and treble response, which, however, never sounds intrusively or coloured.
