Microphones for electric guitars

BOOST YOUR SOUND

Electric guitars provide a special feeling within every song. They are the dazzling star of the stage and shape world hits. Get the best out of your sound with our microphones for miking electric guitars!

Our Recommendation

Our amp-recording microphones excel because of the high-quality, “made-in-Germany” workmanship that goes into them and their natural sound character. Ranging from the M 160 and M 88 to the TG I51 and M 201 – we offer a number of microphones in the M and TG series that will skilfully preserve your guitar sound for posterity. Live on stage or in the studio, it makes no difference at all.

Bass Amplifier

In tandem with the drums, the bass lays the foundation for a band’s performance. The approach to microphoning the bass amp produces a world of unique sound creations both in the studio and live on stage. Our product line includes two microphones that will deliver the power and groove you crave: our extremely multifaceted instrument classic M 88 and the TG D70, a microphone optimised for low frequency sound sources.

Introduction to recording
from electric guitars

It is worth investing a lot of time and effort in the miking of electric guitars. The right sound is influenced by many factors and you will find numerous buttons and controls on your amplifier. In any case, it's worth getting to grips with the sheer number of settings. If you are already one step further and have found your perfect sound setting, we have summarised the first steps for you here.

Selecting
the mics
STEP 1
It is not possible to make a general statement about which microphone set-up is best. It is worth playing with different sound characteristics to create your own sound. To create new timbres, different microphones are often combined, such as a ribbon microphone with a dynamic microphone.

Microphone
Positioning
STEP 2
Place the microphone two to three centimetres away from the fabric covering of the loudspeaker. Make sure that the microphone is positioned approximately at the level of the transition between the dust cap and the speaker cone.
Our tip: Optimise the position again after leveling the microphone signal.

LEVELING
STEP 3

Play the loudest passages on the guitar to produce the maximum level. The gain on the speaker should be set so that the signal peaks never exceed -6 dBFS. This way you still have enough headroom and overload is avoided.

Making a ribbon microphone

We are proud to say that we are one of the few manufacturers worldwide – and the only one located in Germany – to still manufacture ribbon microphones by hand. Today, we will be going into detail about how we manufacture ribbon microphones at our Heilbronn site.
